My Sleep and Health
What Happens When I Sleep, and Why?
Sleep gives us the chance to maintain and repair our bodies and minds. Each night, we cycle through 5 stages of sleep ranging from light sleep to deep, deep sleep. And finally to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. A complete cycle takes 90 to 110 minutes on average. When one full cycle is complete, the cycle starts over again.
- The body replaces chemicals and repairs muscles, other tissues and aging or dead cells
- Sleep lowers the body’s metabolic rate and energy consumption
- Our cardiovascular system also gets a break. People with normal or high blood pressure experience a 20-30% reduction in blood pressure and a 10-20% reduction in heart rate
- Sleep gives our brain an opportunity to reorganize data to help find a solution to problems, process newly learned information and organize and archive memories
- In sleep we recharge the brain. Sections can shut down and repair neurons and exercise important neuronal connections that might otherwise deteriorate due to lack of activity
Sleep Well, Be Well
Quality sleep is our booster for well-being and health. If you have sleep problems though, you’re not alone. Surveys conducted by the National Sleep Foundation reveal that millions of people are not getting good sleep:
- 40 million Americans suffer from over 70 different sleep-related disorders
- 60% of adults report having sleep problems a few nights a week or more
- 69% of children experience one or more sleep problems a few nights or more during a week
When sleep is poor, our renewal, immunization and revitalization functions are not optimized. Our body lets us know in different ways. We become succeptible to health deterioration. The following health problems associate with poor quality sleep:
- Lowered immunity to illnesses
- Weight gain; weight challenges; obesity
- Increased risk of heart disease and stroke
- Insulin resistance and diabetes
- Breathing-related disorders
- Moodiness; aggression; depression
- Reduced physical and work performance
- Grogginess and fatigue
- Lower alertness and poor concentration
- Reduced learning and memory performance
- Accelerated aging
- Decreased sex drive; impotence
- Pains and inflammation
